Academy of Sciences Chennai Honours Scientists at 2025 Awards Ceremony
Chennai: Academy of Sciences Chennai hosted its 2025 Academy Awards Ceremony today, recognising outstanding contributions of young and senior scientists across Tamil Nadu. The event was graced by chief guest Dr V Kamakoti, Director of Indian Institute of Technology Madras, who presented the awards to the recipients.
The ceremony was attended by prominent academic leaders including Dr Rita John, Registrar of University of Madras, Dr J Kumar, Dr V Masilamani, and several fellows of the Academy. The function was presided over by Dr S Sriman Narayanan. Dr A Stephen delivered the welcome address, while the event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr D Ravi Shankaran.
The Academy continues its tradition of recognising excellence in science through awards for young and senior researchers. The Young Scientist Award, instituted in 2014, and the Senior Scientist Awards and Masila–Vijaya Awards, introduced in 2018, aim to encourage scientific research and innovation in the state.
Founded in 1976 by 54 eminent scientists as the Tamil Nadu Academy of Sciences, the organisation was renamed as the Academy of Sciences Chennai in 2014. It focuses on reviewing and advancing education, research, and applications across scientific disciplines, while also organising seminars and conferences at state, national, and international levels.
The Academy comprises leading institutions such as Anna University, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (Kalpakkam), Madurai Kamaraj University, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, IIT Madras, Central Leather Research Institute, Alagappa University, Central University of Tamil Nadu (Thiruvarur), Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, and Bharathiar University. With over 300 fellows, the Academy continues to induct new members annually based on scientific merit.
