Accountants’ Professional Judgement Crucial for AI Adoption Success: ACCA Research
Bengaluru: A new report from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) highlights the importance of professional judgement and critical thinking in supporting organisations’ adoption and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI).
The report, “Risk and responsibility,” notes that AI tools augment human capabilities but raise new questions about control, reliability, and professional responsibility. It emphasizes that accountants play a vital role in harnessing AI’s potential while maintaining robust safeguards.
Md. Sajid Khan, Director – India at ACCA, stated, “Introducing AI into organisations requires redefining how we exercise professional judgement. Success depends on striking the right balance between leveraging AI’s analytical power and strengthening professional expertise.”
Alistair Brisbourne, head of technology research at ACCA, added, “Traditional concepts of materiality and professional scepticism are being reframed in the context of AI systems. This shift challenges accountants to think differently about risk assessment and the nature of professional evidence.”
The report recommends that accountants develop consistent frameworks to ensure uniformity in language and practice across different projects and applications. It also emphasizes the need for organisations to build principles of transparency, accountability, and clear procedures for monitoring and improvement into their AI adoption and implementation plans.
