Promed Hospital Leads Asia’s Biggest Interventional Complications Program in Chennai
Chennai: Chennai reinforced its position as a leading centre for advanced cardiovascular education by hosting the Asia Interventional Complications Course (AICC 2.0), Asia’s largest dedicated academic program on interventional cardiology complications. Organised in association with Promed Hospital, the two-day conference brought together more than 300 interventional cardiologists, clinicians, fellows, and cath lab professionals from India and across the world.
The event was inaugurated by Dr P. Senthil Kumar, IAS, Principal Health Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu, in the presence of Dr Arun Kalyanasundaram, Director, APCTO Club and Chief Cardiologist, Promed Hospital, and Dr Spoorthi Arun, MD, Promed Hospital.
AICC 2.0 focused on advanced strategies for managing complications during coronary and structural heart interventions, covering critical scenarios such as coronary perforation, acute vessel closure, hemodynamic collapse, and vascular access challenges. Designed as a case-based, highly practical learning platform, the course enabled participants to gain hands-on insights into real-world cath lab situations.
A key highlight of the program was the performance of six complex chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary interventions on patients from Australia, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Turkey, the UK, and Italy, with the procedures streamed live for attendees.
The international faculty was led by Dr William Lombardi (USA) and Dr Masahisa Yamane (Japan), who served as International Course Directors. Several eminent experts from India and abroad shared their experience in managing high-risk complications and building systems that enhance operator confidence during complex interventions.
Speaking at the event, Dr P. Senthil Kumar underscored the importance of continuous medical education and structured training platforms in preparing specialists to handle high-risk cardiac procedures. He noted that focused academic forums like AICC play a crucial role in strengthening clinical confidence, improving patient safety, and elevating the standards of cardiovascular care.
Dr Arun Kalyanasundaram, Organising Chairman of AICC 2.0, said, “Over 300 cardiologists from India and several other countries came together for in-depth discussions on managing complications in interventional cardiology. This platform helps operators anticipate challenges and improve patient safety through shared expertise and advanced procedural insights.”
He added that AICC’s comprehensive focus on complications, combined with participation from globally renowned faculty, makes it a unique and invaluable learning opportunity for cardiologists.
Dr Spoorthi Arun highlighted that the course aims to ensure cardiologists and cath lab teams are confident in managing complications in high-risk patients with complex coronary or structural anatomy. “AICC bridges the gap between theory and real-life practice through case discussions, simulations, and practical demonstrations,” she said.
AICC 2.0 received widespread appreciation for its academic depth, global faculty participation, and strong emphasis on real-world learning, further strengthening Chennai’s reputation as a hub for advanced cardiovascular training.
