Asthma Remains Underdiagnosed in 7 out of 10 Severe Cases in India: Experts Urge National Response

On World Asthma Day, experts are highlighting the need for a scaled-up national response to address the growing burden of asthma in India. Despite being a major contributor to non-communicable disease-related deaths, asthma remains underdiagnosed and undertreated, with nearly 70% of severe cases going undiagnosed.

Asthma and other chronic respiratory diseases are among the top three contributors to non-communicable disease-related deaths in India, accounting for over half of all fatalities nationwide. The lack of awareness, stigma, and misconceptions surrounding asthma exacerbate the issue, with fewer than 2.5% of patients using inhaled corticosteroids daily, the recommended treatment.

Dr. Praveen Valsalan, Pulmonologist, Kochi, emphasizes the importance of timely diagnosis, correct inhaler use, and consistent adherence to treatment. “The primary goals of asthma management are to control symptoms, reduce dependence on rescue medication, prevent hospitalizations, and preserve lung function—ultimately improving quality of life.”

Public-facing campaigns like Cipla’s Berok Zindagi and Breathefree initiative have been instrumental in driving informed conversations around asthma and providing patient support. These initiatives offer on-ground screening camps, online tools like the Digital Educator platform, and simple device training videos to guide patients and caregivers toward better asthma control.

Experts urge India to scale up its national response to asthma, integrating awareness, education, and access to care. By working together, India can improve asthma management, reduce hospitalizations, and enhance the quality of life for millions of people living with asthma.
