Dr. R. M. Anjana to Lead Global IDF Initiative on Physical Activity

Chennai: The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has appointed Dr. R. M. Anjana, Managing Director of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre and President of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), as Chair of its Working Group on Physical Activity. She will also spearhead the Federation’s new global program – the IDF ‘ACTIVE’ Initiative, aimed at boosting physical activity across all age groups worldwide.

In her new role, Dr. Anjana will lead an international consortium with representatives from all IDF regions, ensuring global collaboration, regional balance, and gender diversity.

Tackling a Global Health Challenge

Physical inactivity is a major driver of noncommunicable diseases including diabetes, heart disease, and depression. Current data shows that 81% of adolescents and 27.5% of adults fail to meet WHO guidelines for physical activity. The IDF ‘ACTIVE’ Initiative will focus on practical, community-driven programs to improve activity levels and reduce disease burden globally.

Prof. Peter Schwarz, President of IDF, said: “Increasing physical activity is one of the most effective interventions to prevent diabetes and enhance global health. Under Dr. Anjana’s leadership, the ACTIVE Initiative will translate global evidence into practical, community-focused action.”

Dr. Anjana expressed her commitment to the mission: “I am deeply honoured to chair the IDF Working Group on Physical Activity and lead the ACTIVE Initiative. Physical inactivity has become a global crisis, and we need bold, actionable strategies to inspire children, adults, and the elderly to embrace active living.”

Dr. V. Mohan, Chairman of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre and MDRF, added: “This is a proud moment for our organisation and for India. Dr. Anjana’s leadership and contributions to physical activity research make her the ideal choice to drive this global initiative.”

The program will introduce innovative fitness challenges in schools, communities, and workplaces, alongside fitness scoring tools and recognition for fitness ambassadors. By integrating evidence, policy, and grassroots action, the initiative aims to inspire sustainable lifestyle changes and create measurable improvements in physical activity worldwide.
