GEM Hospital Launches Free Colorectal Screening for Tamil Nadu Pensioners
Chennai: Marking Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, GEM Hospital has announced a series of initiatives to promote early detection and awareness of colorectal cancer. The programme includes free screening for Tamil Nadu Government pensioners, a felicitation ceremony for cancer survivors, and expert-led public awareness sessions.
Colorectal cancer is emerging as a significant health concern in India. According to GLOBOCAN 2022 data, the country reports nearly 65,000 new cases and around 38,000 deaths annually. Experts attribute the rising incidence to urban lifestyles, dietary patterns, and an ageing population. A major challenge remains late diagnosis, with many cases detected at advanced stages.
Highlighting the initiative, Dr. P. Senthilnathan, Director of GEM Hospital, said the free screening programme aims to improve access to preventive healthcare for pensioners who may otherwise delay testing. He emphasised that early diagnosis not only improves survival rates but also reduces treatment complexity and costs. Simple procedures like colonoscopy, he noted, can detect precancerous conditions and prevent cancer altogether.
The awareness sessions focus on educating the public about risk factors such as sedentary lifestyle, obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and low-fibre diets. Participants are also informed about early warning signs, including changes in bowel habits, rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, and persistent abdominal discomfort.
Speaking on the importance of early screening, Dr. Pinak Dasgupta, Chief Colorectal Surgeon, said that colorectal cancer is largely preventable and highly treatable when detected early. However, he pointed out that nearly 60–70% of patients in India present at advanced stages due to lack of awareness and regular screening.
As part of the observance, the hospital also hosted a felicitation programme recognising colorectal cancer survivors, celebrating their resilience while reinforcing the importance of timely diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. C. Palanivelu, Founder and Chairman of GEM Hospitals, noted that colorectal cancer is now the fourth most common cancer in India. He highlighted advancements in minimally invasive and robotic surgery that enable faster recovery, fewer complications, and improved quality of life. However, he stressed that early detection remains the key to successful outcomes.
He added that recognising survivors serves as a powerful reminder that colorectal cancer can be effectively treated when diagnosed early.
Through these initiatives, GEM Hospital continues to strengthen its commitment to preventive healthcare, community outreach, and delivering advanced gastrointestinal and cancer care.
