Gleneagles Hospitals, Chennai Sets Global Benchmark with Robotic Removal of 4.95 kg Fibroid Uterus

Chennai: In a landmark medical achievement, Gleneagles Hospitals, Chennai has successfully performed one of the world’s largest fibroid uterus removals via robotic hysterectomy, setting a new benchmark in minimally invasive gynecological surgery. The uterus, weighing 4.95 kilograms—comparable to a 36-week pregnancy—was removed using the advanced Da Vinci XI Surgical System by Dr. Padmapriya Vivek, Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Robotic Surgeon.

The patient, a 47-year-old school teacher from Chennai, had presented with symptoms of abdominal bloating and heaviness. MRI scans revealed multiple fibroids ranging from 12 to 20 cm. Despite the complexity posed by the size and vascularity of the uterus, the robotic-assisted hysterectomy was completed in four hours, with minimal blood loss and no complications. The patient was mobilized the next morning and discharged within 24 hours.

“This case demonstrates the precision, safety, and efficiency of robotic-assisted surgery, even in extreme scenarios,” said Dr. Padmapriya Vivek. “It sets a new gold standard for treating large fibroids through minimally invasive techniques.”

Niranjani, Chief Operating Officer & Hospital Head, Gleneagles Hospitals, Chennai, added, “We are immensely proud of this global milestone. It reflects our commitment to world-class care and surgical excellence.”

The patient expressed gratitude for the swift recovery and compassionate care, noting, “I was frightened when I learned about the size of the fibroid. But the doctors reassured me, and the robotic surgery helped me return to normal life much faster than I imagined.”

This record-setting procedure reinforces Gleneagles Hospitals, Chennai’s reputation as a center of excellence in robotic surgery and advanced women’s healthcare, both in India and globally.
