Chennai: In a momentous celebration of sporting excellence, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology hosted a grand felicitation ceremony for Indian Women’s Cricket Team Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, following India’s historic victory in the ICC Women’s One-Day World Cup. This marked her first visit to South India after leading the national team to its maiden World Cup title.
The tournament, jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, saw eight teams compete, culminating in a thrilling final between India and South Africa. Held at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, the Indian team triumphed by 52 runs, etching their name in history as World Cup champions for the first time.
At the Sathyabama campus in Chennai, Kaur received a rousing welcome with traditional drums and cheers from students and faculty. Chancellor Mariajeena Johnson and President Mary Johnson honored her with a shawl, garland, and a commemorative souvenir. In a heartfelt gesture, Kaur presented a signed cricket bat and team jersey to the university leadership.
The event also marked the inauguration of the state-of-the-art M.J. Indoor Stadium, which Kaur formally opened. Addressing an enthusiastic student gathering, she shared insights from the team’s World Cup journey, emphasizing the values of hard work, humility, and perseverance.
“Success comes from consistent effort, belief in oneself, and staying humble even after victory,” she said, drawing thunderous applause.
In a lighter moment, Kaur recalled receiving a congratulatory call from Tamil cinema icon Rajinikanth while in Thailand. She expressed her hope of meeting him during her Chennai visit, though he was away in Singapore for a film shoot.
The ceremony underscored the role of women athletes in inspiring the nation and highlighted Sathyabama Institute’s commitment to fostering excellence in both academics and sports. The Indian team’s achievement was also recognized at the national level, with congratulatory messages from the Prime Minister and the President of India.
