Honeywell to Help Dangote Double Capacity at Africa’s Largest Refinery

Mumbai: Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE has announced a major collaboration with Honeywell to expand production at its Lekki refinery in Nigeria, Africa’s largest refining facility. The partnership will enable Dangote to process a wider range of crude and double production capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028, positioning it as the world’s largest petroleum refinery.

Strengthening Energy Security

The expansion aims to boost in-continent fuel production, reduce reliance on imports, and enhance Nigeria’s energy security. Honeywell will supply advanced technology, proprietary catalysts, equipment, and services to help improve efficiency, reduce costs, and increase throughput.

“Our continued collaboration with Honeywell marks a significant milestone not only for Dangote’s refinery, but for Nigeria’s energy sector as a whole,” said Aliko Dangote, President, Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE. “Through Honeywell’s proven technologies, we can set new production standards while contributing to Nigeria’s energy independence and economic growth.”

Long-Term Partnership

Honeywell has been supporting Dangote’s Lekki refinery for nearly a decade with process technology solutions. The new expansion will maximize existing infrastructure, accelerate project timelines, and deliver faster speed to market.

“Honeywell is committed to delivering groundbreaking technologies that empower customers, drive operational excellence, and support regional energy security,” said Rajesh Gattupalli, President, Honeywell UOP. “Our work with Dangote demonstrates how innovation and collaboration can enhance regional energy independence and meet Africa’s growing energy needs.”

Petrochemical Growth

As part of the agreement, Dangote will also license Honeywell’s Oleflex technology, which converts propane to propylene through catalytic dehydrogenation. This will enable production of 750,000 metric tons of propylene annually, increasing Dangote’s total polypropylene output to 2.4 million metric tons per year. Polypropylene is a key component in plastics and packaging materials.

Global Scale

Dangote’s Lekki facility is already the largest single-train refinery in the world, producing Euro-V quality gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and polypropylene. Honeywell, with over a century of experience in the energy sector, has licensed its process technologies and catalysts to more than 6,000 refineries and industrial facilities worldwide
