IEX Records Highest-Ever Monthly Electricity Trading Volume of 13,050 MU in January 2026

Mumbai: Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) reported its highest-ever monthly electricity traded volume of 13,050 million units (MU) in January 2026, registering a 19.6% year-on-year growth, the exchange said on Monday.

The Real-Time Market (RTM) recorded a sharp rise in activity, with traded volumes increasing 52.8% year-on-year to 4,638 MU, compared to 3,036 MU in January 2025.

According to government data released in January, India’s electricity consumption rose to 142.74 billion units (BUs), reflecting a 3.8% annual increase. Higher generation from hydro, wind and solar sources, along with steady coal-based supply, improved liquidity on the exchange platform and led to a decline in power prices.

The average market clearing price in the Day-Ahead Market (DAM) stood at ₹3.86 per unit, down 12.9% year-on-year, while the average RTM price declined 15.9% to ₹3.72 per unit. Lower prices enabled distribution companies (Discoms) and commercial and industrial consumers to replace higher-cost power through exchange-based procurement.
