IIHMR University Renames School of Development Studies in Honour of M.L. Mehta

Mumbai: IIHMR University has announced a significant milestone by renaming its School of Development Studies as the M.L. Mehta School of Development Studies. The decision was approved during the University’s 33rd Board of Management meeting, recognizing M.L. Mehta’s immense contributions to public service, social development, and institutional leadership, as well as his formative role in the growth of IIHMR.

Dr. P.R. Sodani, President of IIHMR University, said: “Naming the School of Development Studies after M.L. Mehta is an expression of our profound respect for his life and work. It symbolizes our commitment to carrying forward his values—service to society, evidence-based development, ethical governance, and unwavering dedication to nation-building. His legacy will continue to inspire our students, scholars, and faculty to build institutions and systems that serve society with integrity, compassion, and innovation.”

Honouring a Distinguished Career

M.L. Mehta, a distinguished Indian Administrative Service officer, served as Chief Secretary to the Government of Rajasthan. His career is widely regarded as a beacon of integrity, vision, and commitment to public welfare.

He played a pivotal role in strengthening state institutions and pioneering livelihood initiatives, most notably the Rajasthan Mission on Livelihoods, which transformed opportunities for communities across the state. His initiatives have uplifted countless lives and continue to shape India’s developmental thinking.

Legacy of Leadership

As one of the founding members of the Institute of Health Management Research (IIHMR) and its former Trustee Secretary, Mehta was instrumental in shaping the institution’s vision, values, and strategic direction. The renaming of the School of Development Studies stands as a tribute to his enduring influence and a reaffirmation of IIHMR University’s commitment to advancing inclusive development.
