India’s First Right Axillary TAVR Procedure Performed at SRM Prime Hospital
Chennai: SRM Prime Hospital has successfully performed India’s first transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) through the right axillary artery, offering a life-saving solution to a 73-year-old patient with severe calcific aortic stenosis.
The minimally invasive procedure was chosen after conventional access routes were found unsuitable due to vascular complications. The patient was discharged within three days and has resumed normal activities.
The procedure was led by Dr. Balamurugan S, along with a multidisciplinary cardiac team.
Doctors said TAVR allows valve replacement without open-heart surgery, ensuring faster recovery, especially for elderly and high-risk patients. The success of this case marks a significant advancement in alternative access cardiac interventions in India.
Experts also highlighted the importance of early detection of symptoms such as breathlessness, fatigue, chest pain, and fainting, particularly among individuals above 60 years.
