Kauvery Hospitals Stress Early Access to Level I Trauma Care on World Head Injury Awareness Day
Chennai: Kauvery Hospitals highlighted the critical importance of timely access to Level I Trauma Care Centres for patients with severe head injuries, ahead of World Head Injury Awareness Day (March 20). The event was attended by K Shankar, Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services.
Head injuries—affecting the scalp, skull, or brain—are most commonly caused by road traffic accidents, falls, sports injuries, and assaults. Globally, over 50 million people suffer head injuries each year, while India records an estimated 1.5 million cases annually, with nearly 60% linked to road accidents.
Medical experts emphasised that Level I Trauma Care Centres, the highest tier of emergency care, are equipped to handle the most complex and life-threatening injuries with specialised teams and advanced infrastructure.
Dr Krish Sridhar, Group Mentor – Neurosciences and Director, Institute of Brain & Spine, Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road, underscored the importance of the “golden hour.” He noted that rapid access to specialised trauma centres significantly improves survival rates and neurological recovery in patients with severe head injuries.
Echoing similar views, Dr Ranganathan Jothi, Chief Brain & Spine Surgeon and Director of Neurosciences, Kauvery Hospital, Vadapalani, highlighted that conditions such as intracranial bleeding and brain swelling require immediate neurosurgical intervention. Delay in treatment, he said, can lead to severe complications, long-term disability, or even death.
Dr Aravindan Selvaraj, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Kauvery Group of Hospitals, stated that the growing burden of trauma in society calls for stronger emergency response systems and quicker patient transport to advanced care centres.
Kauvery Hospitals handle hundreds of trauma and head injury cases annually across their Chennai facilities, including Alwarpet, Radial Road, and Vadapalani, where specialised neurosurgical teams operate round the clock.
The hospital group’s Level I Trauma Care Centres are equipped with 24/7 availability of neurosurgeons, trauma surgeons, emergency physicians, and critical care specialists, along with advanced imaging facilities such as CT and MRI, dedicated trauma resuscitation units, emergency operating theatres, and specialised neuro-critical care units.
To enhance emergency response, Kauvery Hospitals has also strengthened its ambulance network and introduced an SOS feature in the Kauvery Kare mobile application, enabling users to quickly access emergency services and ambulance support.
Through ongoing awareness initiatives and advanced trauma care systems, Kauvery Hospitals aims to improve survival outcomes and reduce long-term disability among patients suffering from severe head injuries.
