Low Awareness of Shingles Disease Among Indians Over 50, Despite Being at Risk

Chennai: A recent global survey has revealed that a staggering 56.6% of Indian participants aged 50 and above have limited knowledge of shingles, despite being vulnerable to the disease. The survey, launched at the start of Shingles Awareness Week (February 24 – March 2, 2025), highlights the need for greater awareness of age-related health risks.

Key findings from the survey include:

  • 61% of Indian respondents reported living with chronic conditions such as diabetes, COPD, asthma, cardiovascular disease, or chronic kidney disease.
  • Only 49.8% of respondents expressed significant concern about developing shingles.
  • Globally, 54% of participants had chronic conditions, but only 13% expressed significant concern about shingles.

Dr. Shalini Menon, Medical Director at GSK India, emphasized the importance of awareness and preventive measures. “As we age, our natural ability to fight disease diminishes, making us more susceptible to diseases like shingles. It is essential for ageing individuals to understand the impact of ageing on their health, recognize these risks, and adopt preventive measures.”

The survey highlights the need for greater awareness and education about shingles and its risks, particularly among individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
