M.V. Hospital for Diabetes organized Free Yoga Camp for public to create awareness for general wellbeing and prevention of Diabetes

MV Diabetes Royapuram, Adyar and Velachery offers Online Yoga classes, Around 100 people of diverse age group from 18 to 60 years participated in yoga camp

Chennai, 24 June 2024: As a part of a Social Initiative and to celebrate International Yoga Day, M.V. Hospital for Diabetes today organized physical activity sessions at Andhra Mahila Sabha Hospital, RA Puram, Adyar for the public to create awareness about the benefits of physical Activity. Around 100 people of diverse age group from 18 to 60 years participated in yoga sessions. Students of KRM Public school also participated in the Yoga Camp. Dr. R. Elangovan was the Chief Guest of the event. He also participated and shared about his routine fitness activities.

Dr. R. Elangovan, the first Yoga Professor appointed officially in the history of Tamil Nadu Government Universities present at the occasion spoke to the public on the importance of yoga for general wellbeing of every individual. He has published various articles in national & international journals about his research on Yoga. He has been honoured with various awards at national and international levels towards his contribution for Yoga and its reach.

Dr. Vijay Viswanathan, Head and Chief Diabetologist, M.V. Hospital for Diabetes said “Over the past 69 years, we have developed a team here in our hospital and we are able to provide Holistic care to the people with Diabetes by not only providing treatment through medicines, diet and education but through teaching physical Activity and diet control with the help of our counsellors & we are helping them to live a healthy life.”

“Our 3 research papers in peer reviewed Journals on effect of Yoga in people with diabetes found improvement in the glycaemic control (HbA1c, Blood glucose levels), sleep quality, diastolic pressure, triglycerides & drug (medicines) requirement, helps in Diabetes control. The third study was funded by the DST under Science and Technology of Yoga and Meditation (SATYAM) programme is aimed to foster scientific research on the effects of yoga and meditation on physical & mental health and on cognitive functioning in healthy people as well as in patients with disorders” added Dr. Vijay Viswanathan

The MV Hospital for Diabetes and Prof M Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre Royapuram has been involved in several social events in the past like providing Free Flu vaccine under Prof. M Viswanathan & Mrs. Sarada Viswanathan Trust, organizing camps to create awareness about Diabetes and its complications, providing free Screening tests in the hospital for the offspring of the people with Diabetes to detect pre-diabetes and provide counseling to create awareness and prevent Diabetes.
