Rela Hospital Launches Mobile Stroke Care Unit and Survivor Support Group

New Initiatives Mark World Stroke Day with Focus on Rapid Response and Rehabilitation

Chennai: Rela Hospital marked World Stroke Day with the launch of two major initiatives: a Mobile Stroke Care Unit and New Beginnings, a dedicated support group for stroke survivors and caregivers. The event was inaugurated by film director Aishwarya Rajinikanth, alongside Prof. Mohamed Rela, Chairman of Rela Hospital; Dr. Shankar Balakrishnan, Clinical Lead, Neurology & Neuro-Sciences; and Dr. Muralidharan Vetrivel, Cerebrovascular Neurosurgeon.

Mobile Stroke Care Unit: Speed Saves Lives

Aligned with this year’s World Stroke Organisation theme, #EveryMinuteCounts, the Mobile Stroke Care Unit is designed to deliver life-saving care within the critical “golden hour.” The unit offers:

  • On-site neurological assessment
  • Thrombosis screening
  • Emergency transport coordination
  • Tele-consultation with neurologists
  • Initial rehabilitation counselling

Prof. Mohamed Rela emphasized the urgency of early intervention, citing that India recorded over 1.25 million new stroke cases in 2021—a 51% rise over three decades. “This mobile unit ensures treatment begins even before the patient reaches the hospital,” he said.

New Beginnings: A Community for Stroke Survivors

The New Beginnings support group provides a structured platform for survivors and caregivers to connect, share experiences, and access guidance on post-stroke recovery. “Rehabilitation is not just medical—it’s emotional and social. This group helps rebuild lives,” added Prof. Rela.

Expert Insights on Stroke Prevention and Care

Dr. Shankar Balakrishnan explained that strokes result from interrupted blood supply (ischemic) or vessel rupture (haemorrhagic), with risk factors including hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and smoking. He urged regular vascular screening and lifestyle changes for prevention.

Dr. Muralidharan Vetrivel highlighted Rela Hospital’s advanced neuro-care infrastructure, including EEG, EMG, Nerve Conduction Studies, and a Neurointerventional Cath Lab. “Our integrated approach ensures accurate diagnosis, timely treatment, and continuous support,” he said.
