Weaving Mela Celebrates National Handloom Day at Shuttles & Needles

Chennai: Shuttles & Needles, a contemporary weaving studio in Adyar, organized “Weaving Mela ’25” on August 2, 2025, to celebrate National Handloom Day, which falls on August 7 every year. The event’s theme, “Weaving is joyful,” brought together around 40 urbanites from different age groups and professions who share a passion for hand weaving.

Showcasing Creative Aspects of Hand Weaving

The participants spent three hours weaving on modern looms, creating interesting products using traditional Indian motifs like Kanchipuram Korvai temple border design and Jamdaani motifs. The event aimed to promote working with hands, spread awareness about Indian handloom culture, and showcase the creative aspects of hand weaving. Naresh Ramasubramaniam, Managing Director of Shuttles & Needles, emphasized that weaving is a meditative and creative activity that brings joy and emotional well-being.

Benefits of Hand Weaving

He also highlighted the benefits of hand weaving, including analytical and problem-solving skills for children, and how modern small home looms have made it possible for people to weave simple products like scarves, cushion covers, and bags. Shuttles & Needles sells modern portable handlooms, conducts workshops, and sells yarns for knitting, crochet, and weaving, promoting the appreciation and preservation of India’s handloom heritage.
