SIMS Hospital Achieves Remarkable Success in Treating Rare Skin Tumor

Chennai: A multidisciplinary team at SIMS Hospital has successfully treated a young IT professional suffering from Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans (DFSP), a rare and aggressive skin cancer. The cancer had severely affected the patient’s scalp and skull, requiring a complex surgical procedure.

Groundbreaking Surgery

The surgical team, led by experts from the Institute of Craniofacial, Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery (ICAPS), performed a multi-stage procedure to remove the tumor, reconstruct the skull, and repair the scalp. The surgery involved using skin grafts, flaps, tissue expanders, and a piece of tissue from the patient’s thigh to achieve a successful outcome. Additionally, a metastatic lung nodule was removed during the procedure.
