SIMS Hospital Performs Life-Changing Precision Neurosurgery to Treat Hemifacial Spasm

Chennai: SIMS Hospital has successfully performed precision neurosurgery guided by advanced neurophysiology to treat a 40-year-old man suffering from Hemifacial Spasm (HFS), also known as “winking disease.”

The patient, Sajeeth, a civil engineer from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, had been experiencing involuntary facial spasms for five years, which significantly impacted his quality of life. Despite consulting experts from top hospitals, he was misdiagnosed and advised to accept the condition as incurable.

SIMS Hospital’s Institute of Neurosciences diagnosed Sajeeth with HFS, a condition caused by a blood vessel pressing against the facial nerve near the brainstem. The hospital’s team of neurosurgeons, neuroanesthetists, and neurophysiologists performed Microvascular Decompression (MVD) guided by Intra-Operative Neuro-Monitoring (IONM), providing a permanent solution to the condition.

Dr. Vishwaraj Ratha, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon at SIMS Hospital, highlighted the importance of IONM-guided MVD in treating HFS. “This niche surgery can restore the smile and confidence in patients who have been told that there is no cure.”

Dr. Nishanth Sampath, Senior Consultant Neurophysiologist at SIMS Hospital, emphasized the role of advanced IONM in ensuring the safety and success of the procedure.

Dr. Ravi Pachamuthu, Chairman of SIMS Hospital, reiterated the hospital’s commitment to providing advanced, patient-centered care for neurological conditions.

SIMS Hospital encourages those affected by HFS to seek timely treatment for a life-changing outcome.
