Chennai: SIMS Hospital in Chennai has successfully performed South India’s first combined beating heart four vessel bypass surgery (CABG) and pacemaker implantation on a 92-year-old retired gynaecologist. This pioneering procedure showcases the possibilities of modern medicine in treating elderly patients with complex health conditions.
The surgery was performed by Dr. V.V. Bashi, Director & Senior Consultant at the Institute of Cardiac & Advanced Aortic Diseases, SIMS Hospital. Dr. Bashi has over 45 years of experience and has conducted over 20,000 heart surgeries. The patient, despite being 92 years old with borderline diabetes, recovered well and was discharged seven days post-surgery.
Dr. Ravi Pachamuthu, Chairman, SIMS Hospital said, “This landmark procedure is more than just a clinical success, it is a statement of what modern Indian healthcare can achieve.”
“Performing a beating heart coronary bypass along with a pacemaker implantation on a 92-year-old patient is rare, not just for the complexity involved, but because it reflects the advancement of cardiac care available today,” said Dr. V.V. Bashi.
The 92-year-old patient, a retired gynaecologist, expressed his confidence in the medical team and the procedure. He said, “As a doctor, I was fully aware of the risks involved, but what gave me the confidence was the clarity with which my condition was explained and the trust I felt in Dr. Bashi and his team.”
