SRMIST Signs MoU with Indian Naval Academy to Promote Research and Technology Collaboration
Kattankulathur: SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala, to strengthen collaboration in technical education, research, faculty development and academic exchange.
The MoU was signed on March 10 by Captain G. Sowjanya Sree, Registrar (AoD) of the Indian Naval Academy, and Dr. S. Ponnusamy, Registrar of SRMIST. The agreement marks the beginning of a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing academic cooperation and technological collaboration between the two institutions.
Under the agreement, both institutions will work together in various academic and research initiatives including the exchange of faculty, students and scholarly resources. They will also organise joint seminars, workshops, conferences and expert lectures to promote knowledge sharing.
The collaboration will focus on emerging technological areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, automation and green energy. Cadets and students will benefit from academic visits, technical engagements and innovation-driven activities, while faculty members from both institutions will collaborate on joint research projects and development programmes.

The MoU will also create higher education opportunities for Indian Navy personnel at SRMIST. As part of the agreement, up to eight M.Tech seats will be allocated annually for naval personnel, along with up to six PhD seats each year, with a maximum of 30 doctoral registrations over a period of five years. Faculty members from the Indian Naval Academy will also be eligible to serve as co-guides for doctoral scholars at SRMIST.
Located in Ezhimala, the Indian Naval Academy is the premier officers’ training establishment of the Indian Navy. The academy provides rigorous professional and academic training to officer cadets before they are commissioned into the Navy. It also offers a four-year B.Tech programme in disciplines such as Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Applied Electronics and Communication Engineering.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. C. Muthamizhchelvan, Vice Chancellor of SRMIST, said the collaboration represents an important step in strengthening the link between academic excellence and national service. He noted that joint work in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, automation and green technologies would create valuable opportunities for students and cadets to engage with emerging technologies and innovative research.
Rear Admiral G. Rambabu, Principal of the Indian Naval Academy, said rapid technological advancements are shaping modern naval operations and it is essential for officer cadets to gain exposure to emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, automation and green energy.
He added that the partnership with SRMIST would enhance academic engagement, research collaboration and technological learning for future naval officers.
The collaboration reflects the shared commitment of both institutions to advance research, innovation and knowledge exchange while creating meaningful opportunities for cadets, students and faculty members to address emerging technological challenges.
