Tata Steel Replaces Furnace Oil with Cleaner Fuel in Ferrochrome Industry First

Tata Steel has made a significant stride in its sustainability journey by replacing furnace oil with Piped Natural Gas (PNG) at its Ferro Alloys Plant (FAP) in Jajpur district of Odisha.

This environmentally responsible move, a first in the ferrochrome industry in India, will substantially reduce the company’s carbon footprint and contribute to the country’s goal of a greener industrial future.

  • Cleaner Fuel: PNG will be used for preheating chrome ore, replacing furnace oil and reducing harmful emissions.
  • Carbon Footprint Reduction: The transition will significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions, reinforcing Tata Steel’s commitment to sustainability.
  • Long-term Supply: Tata Steel has signed an MoU with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to secure a long-term supply of piped natural gas.

Pankaj Satija, Executive-In-charge, Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division (FAMD), stated, “By replacing furnace oil with PNG, we aim to contribute to the nation’s effort in mitigating the effects of global warming and moving towards options of lower carbon footprint.”
