Gleneagles Hospital Launches Advanced Liver OPD Suite for Comprehensive Multidisciplinary Liver Care
Chennai: Gleneagles Hospital, Perumbakkam, Chennai, part of the Fortis Healthcare Network, has launched a dedicated Liver OPD Suite aimed at providing integrated evaluation, diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of liver diseases. The facility has been designed to offer multidisciplinary care for patients across all age groups, from newborns with inherited liver disorders to adults requiring liver transplantation or cancer treatment.
The Liver OPD Suite was inaugurated by actor, director and radio jockey RJ Balaji in the presence of Anil Vinayak, Group Chief Operating Officer, Fortis Healthcare; Dr. S. Niranjani, Chief Operating Officer and Hospital Head, Gleneagles Hospital, Chennai; Dr. Joy Varghese, Director – Hepatology & Transplant Hepatology; and Dr. Biswarup Pal, Head of Medical Services.
According to the hospital, the new facility builds on its liver care and transplantation programme. Over the past seven years, Gleneagles Hospital has performed more than 700 liver transplants.
The OPD Suite brings together multiple specialised liver care services under one roof. These include paediatric hepatology and paediatric liver transplant services for infants and children, treatment programmes for metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and other metabolic liver disorders, integrated care for patients with liver and kidney failure requiring simultaneous liver-kidney transplantation, liver oncology services for primary and secondary liver cancers, and clinical pathways for inherited genetic liver disorders in children.
Speaking at the launch, Anil Vinayak, Group Chief Operating Officer, Fortis Healthcare, said the pattern of liver disease in India has evolved over the past decade, with an increasing burden of metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease linked to obesity and diabetes, inherited liver disorders, liver cancers and complex multi-organ conditions such as hepatorenal syndrome.
He said these conditions require coordinated care involving multiple specialists rather than conventional outpatient treatment. According to him, the upgraded Liver OPD Suite has been designed to streamline the patient journey from diagnosis through medical, interventional, surgical and transplant care within an integrated clinical system.
Dr. Joy Varghese, Director – Hepatology & Transplant Hepatology, said the hospital’s experience in liver transplantation has provided a strong clinical foundation, but emphasised that transplantation represents only one stage of a patient’s treatment journey.
He stated that the new OPD Suite has been developed to support earlier diagnosis, comprehensive management at different stages of liver disease and coordinated care for patients of all ages. He added that the facility is intended to accommodate future developments in metabolic liver disease management, genetic diagnostics, precision medicine and early cancer detection by integrating new medical, interventional and surgical advances into a single multidisciplinary care system.
Gleneagles Hospital stated that it ranks first in Tamil Nadu for liver transplantation under the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Health Insurance Scheme, having completed more than 200 liver transplants under the scheme.
The hospital’s Institute of Liver Disease & Transplantation was recognised as the “Best Liver Transplant Team” by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2019.
The hospital has also reported several national and international milestones, including performing the world’s first paediatric combined living donor kidney and liver transplantation for a child with Primary Hyperoxaluria Type II, along with multiple first-in-India liver transplant procedures for rare and complex conditions.
