AM/NS India Becomes First Integrated Steelmaker to Earn Govt Green Steel Certification
Chennai: ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has become the first integrated steel producer in the country to receive Green Steel certification under the Ministry of Steel’s newly introduced Green Steel Taxonomy. The company’s Hot Rolled (HR) coils and sheets secured a four-star rating, while Cold Rolled (CR) coils and sheets received a three-star rating.
The certification is based on emissions intensity below 2.2 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of finished steel and was validated through an independent audit by the National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST). The certified products—widely used across automotive, infrastructure, defence, construction equipment, and consumer durables sectors—are now officially recognised as government-certified green steel, helping customers reduce Scope 3 emissions.
AM/NS India said around 65% of its steelmaking capacity uses the Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) route with natural gas, contributing to over 35% reduction in carbon emissions intensity since 2015. The company has also integrated renewable energy, including power from a 1 GW hybrid project in Kurnool supplying its Hazira plant since 2025.
ArcelorMittal has additionally announced investments of about USD 0.9 billion in new renewable projects across Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, which will raise its renewable capacity in India to 2 GW. AM/NS India is also developing a 550-MW hybrid renewable project in Bhachau, Gujarat.
With certification secured, the company has begun commercial production of certified green HR and CR products. In FY25, AM/NS India reported CO₂ emissions intensity 14% lower than the national average and aims to achieve a 20% reduction by 2030 compared with its 2021 baseline.
