Kauvery Hospital’s 24×7 Diabetes Helpline Completes 1500 Days of Service

Chennai: Kauvery Hospital’s 24×7 Diabetes Helpline has completed 1500 days of uninterrupted service, marking a significant milestone in diabetes care. Launched on April 21, 2021, the helpline provides expert medical guidance, emergency intervention, and daily diabetes management support to patients across Tamil Nadu.

The helpline, powered by a specialized team of diabetes educators, physicians, dietitians, and data-monitoring experts, offers proactive, holistic, and personalized support. This includes assisting patients during hypoglycemic episodes and interpreting real-time Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS) data. In 2024, the helpline managed 12,541 calls, a significant increase from 1,223 calls in 2021, reflecting its growing role in diabetes care.

To mark this milestone, TN Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Ma. Subramanian, joined the hospital leadership and care teams in acknowledging the helpline’s impact and encouraging continued innovation in accessible chronic care services.

Impactful Services:

  • Multilingual Support: The helpline offers multilingual support and WhatsApp-based services, enabling patients to share glucose readings, reports, and photos instantly.
  • Emergency Response: 0.89% of calls were emergencies, predominantly hypoglycemia, which were effectively managed through immediate telephonic support and follow-ups.
  • Centralized Care Coordination: The helpline is evolving into a centralized care coordination point for managing diabetes-related complications involving the heart, kidneys, brain, and vascular system.

Success Stories:

  • A woman experiencing hypoglycemia was guided to consume fast-acting glucose, improving her symptoms and preventing escalation to an emergency room visit.
  • A pregnant woman with gestational diabetes received real-time insulin and diet guidance, delivering healthy twins despite initial high-risk sugar levels.
  • An IT professional with Type 1 diabetes received timely care for diabetic ketoacidosis, potentially saving his life.
  • A patient with a diabetic foot ulcer received continuous support via teleconsultations and remote wound monitoring, ensuring proper treatment and healing without hospitalization.

Dr. Baraneedharan, Senior Consultant Diabetologist at Kauvery Hospital, emphasizes, “Diabetes doesn’t follow a timetable—and neither should care.” Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Co-founder and Executive Director of Kauvery Group of Hospitals, adds, “The 24×7 Diabetes Helpline reflects our philosophy of making healthcare continuous, compassionate, and accessible.”
