Rela Hospital Performs India’s First Wrist-Based Procedure for Brain Aneurysm
Chennai: Rela Hospital has successfully performed India’s first right transradial WEB embolisation to treat a ruptured brain aneurysm, marking a major advancement in neurointerventional care.
The minimally invasive procedure was carried out on a 60-year-old woman with a rare, complex wide-neck cerebral aneurysm. Doctors used an advanced intrasaccular implant, the Woven EndoBridge (WEB), delivered through an artery in the wrist, eliminating the need for stents or dual antiplatelet medication.
The patient was admitted with a sudden, severe headache, loss of consciousness, and extremely high blood pressure. Emergency imaging confirmed bleeding around the brain and a high-risk aneurysm at a vessel bifurcation, prompting immediate intervention.
The procedure was led by Dr. Muralidharan Vetrivel, with support from Dr. Natesan Damodaran and Dr. Ramanan Rajagopal. Hospital Chairman Prof. Mohamed Rela said the wrist-based approach allows complex aneurysms to be treated without opening the skull, reducing surgical trauma and recovery time.
The patient is recovering well and has been shifted out of the ICU. Doctors highlighted hypertension as the leading risk factor for brain aneurysms and urged early medical attention for sudden, severe headaches.
