Serentica Renewables Commissions Phase 1 of 1 GWh Battery Energy Storage System in Bikaner
Mumbai: Serentica Renewables, the renewable energy arm of the Vedanta Group, has commissioned Phase 1 of its 1 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Bikaner, Rajasthan, marking its entry into utility-scale energy storage for the commercial and industrial (C&I) sector.
The first phase consists of a 200 MWh Battery Energy Storage System, designed to store surplus renewable energy generated during the day and release it during periods of peak demand. This enables the supply of renewable electricity during nighttime while supporting improved grid stability.
According to the company, the project has been developed using a modular architecture that allows operational flexibility, scalability and rapid response capabilities. The storage system is intended to facilitate greater integration of renewable energy into the power grid.
The Bikaner project supports one of the world’s first time-block Round-the-Clock (RTC) renewable power arrangements for industrial consumers. The battery storage system is designed to help convert intermittent renewable power into a more reliable source of electricity that can be supplied throughout the day.
Commenting on the development, Akshay Hiranandani, Chief Executive Officer of Serentica Renewables, said battery energy storage systems are expected to play an important role in India’s clean energy transition by enabling renewable power to be available when required.
He stated that the commissioning of the first phase of the 1 GWh project represents a step towards providing reliable, round-the-clock renewable energy for industries through the integration of battery storage with renewable power generation.
The commissioning of the Bikaner project is the first phase of Serentica Renewables’ broader energy storage plans. The company stated that it intends to build a 7 GWh battery order pipeline over the next two years, with the aim of expanding its battery storage portfolio for the commercial and industrial sector in India.
