36% Increase in Stipend for Youth Under NAPS and NATS

Mumbai: The Central Apprenticeship Council (CAC) has recommended a 36% increase in stipend for youth under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) and the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS). This significant move aims to make apprenticeship more rewarding and aspirational for India’s youth.

The stipend range would be revised from ₹5,000-₹9,000 to ₹6,800-₹12,300. This revision aims to reduce dropout rates and attract more candidates across diverse sectors. The stipend will be automatically adjusted biennially based on changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), ensuring that the stipend remains relevant and effective in supporting apprentices.

Jayant Chaudhary, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), emphasized the importance of apprenticeship in connecting education, industry, and employment, especially for rural youth. He stated, “Apprenticeship is not just a skilling mechanism—it is a bridge that connects education, industry, and employment, especially for our rural youth.”

The move is expected to have a significant impact on the apprenticeship ecosystem in India. With over 43.47 lakh apprentices engaged across 36 States and Union Territories under PM-NAPS, and female participation reaching 20%, the stipend revision is likely to further boost the program’s success. The proposal will be sent to the Cabinet for final approval, and upon implementation, it will make apprenticeship more attractive and rewarding for youth.
