Windergy India 2025: MNRE Urges 85% Local Content in Wind Projects

Chennai: Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, has called upon the wind energy industry—including OEMs and component manufacturers—to raise local content in wind projects to 85%, up from the current 64%. This push aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat in clean energy technologies. Addressing the industry at Windergy India 2025, the minister emphasized that boosting domestic value addition is vital to fortify India’s clean energy supply chain amid shifting global dynamics and geopolitical challenges.

The minister was speaking at the 7th edition of Windergy India 2025, India’s largest wind energy advocacy platform and exhibition, held from October 29 to 31 at Chennai. The event witnessed participation from 350 exhibitors representing over 20 countries and drew more than 15,000 visitors. Distinguished guests included S.S. Sivasankar, Minister of Transport and Electricity, Government of Tamil Nadu, and Johann Saathoff, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development, Germany.

Highlighting the sector’s progress, Joshi stated, “Wind energy contributes nearly one-fifth of the 257 GW of installed capacity. Wind is playing a crucial role in driving Aatmanirbharta and indigenization, given its high local content. India can capture 10% of the global wind supply chain by 2030, and up to 20% by 2040.”

He further added, “India is among the top five countries manufacturing most wind components domestically. We have reached nearly 54 GW of installed wind capacity, and with progressive policies like ALMM (Wind), we expect the next 46 GW of capacity to be largely driven by domestic manufacturing. This financial year alone, annual installations are projected to exceed 6 GW, setting a strong pace toward our long-term goals.”

Girish Tanti, Chairman of the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA), welcomed the MNRE’s mission to strengthen Atmanirbharta in wind energy. “With nearly 64% local content and over 2,500 MSMEs contributing to the sector, India has built one of the most resilient and competitive wind manufacturing ecosystems in the world,” he said. “Our domestic capabilities today span across key components such as nacelles, blades, and towers, commanding over 10% of the global market share. With continued focus on technology, scale, and innovation, India is uniquely positioned not only to achieve 85% localization in the coming years but also to serve 10% of the global wind supply chain by 2030—truly becoming a trusted partner in the world’s clean energy transition.”

Windergy India 2025 is jointly organised by the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA) and PDA Ventures Pvt. Ltd.
