Gleneagles Hospitals Chennai Completes 500 Robotic Gynaecological Surgeries in 28 Months

Chennai: Gleneagles Hospitals Chennai, part of Fortis Healthcare, has achieved a major clinical milestone by completing 500 robotic-assisted gynaecological surgeries in just 28 months, marking one of the fastest such accomplishments in India.

The milestone highlights the increasing adoption of minimally invasive, technology-driven surgical care in women’s health. The achievement was commemorated at the hospital with a celebratory event attended by doctors, staff, and patients who have benefited from robotic procedures.

The programme has been led by Dr. Padmapriya Vivek, Director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Robotic Surgeon, who has handled a wide range of complex and high-risk cases. These include hysterectomies, myomectomies, advanced endometriosis surgeries, gynaecological oncology procedures, and treatment of conditions such as fibroids, adenomyosis, ovarian cysts, and pelvic organ prolapse.

A key highlight of the milestone is a world-record 5 kg fibroid hysterectomy, demonstrating the precision and capability of robotic-assisted surgery in managing complex cases.

Women between the ages of 25 and 70 have benefited from these procedures, including patients requiring fertility-preserving treatments as well as those undergoing cancer-related surgeries. Robotic-assisted surgeries are known to offer advantages such as reduced blood loss, smaller incisions, less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery.

Dr. Padmapriya Vivek said that completing 500 procedures in a short period has enhanced clinical experience across a broad spectrum of gynaecological conditions, adding that robotic technology enables greater precision, improved visualisation, and better patient outcomes.

S. Niranjani, Chief Operating Officer and Hospital Head, stated that robotic surgery has become a significant advancement in treating gynaecological conditions, particularly in complex pelvic surgeries where precision and faster recovery are critical.

Anil Vinayak, Group Chief Operating Officer of Fortis Healthcare, said the milestone reflects the organisation’s commitment to adopting advanced technologies and delivering high-quality, patient-centric care while expanding access to minimally invasive procedures.

Patients who underwent robotic surgery reported lower post-operative pain, minimal blood loss, and quicker recovery, allowing them to return to normal activities sooner.
