Honeywell Technologies to Support Dangote’s Planned 700,000-Barrel Kenya Refinery

Mumbai: Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE has selected Honeywell Technologies to provide process technologies, licensing, engineering services, catalysts, equipment and digital solutions for its planned 700,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Kenya.

Once completed, the facility is expected to become the world’s largest single-train refinery.

The project builds on nearly a decade of collaboration between Honeywell Technologies and Dangote. The Kenya refinery will use engineering designs previously developed for Dangote’s refinery in Lekki, Nigeria. According to the companies, this could reduce the development schedule by nearly two years, or about 30% compared with typical newly constructed facilities.

The refinery is planned to produce gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and polypropylene. It will also be designed to process a wide range of crude oils, from light to heavy grades, allowing feedstocks to be sourced from multiple regions.

The Honeywell Technologies project scope is expected to be approximately $300 million, similar to its work on the Lekki refinery.

Aliko Dangote, President, Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE, said the project is aimed at expanding Africa’s refining capacity and supporting energy security while serving growing export markets.

Rajesh Gattupalli, President of Honeywell Technologies UOP, said established large-train engineering designs from the companies’ previous collaboration would be adapted for the Kenya project to reduce development time and provide greater crude-processing flexibility.

The Kenya project is the latest development in the companies’ long-standing relationship, which also includes technology, engineering, catalyst and digital support for Dangote’s Lekki facility in Nigeria.
