SIMS Hospital Performs Asia’s First New-Generation Bone-Sparing Hip Procedure on International Patients
Chennai: SIMS Hospital in Chennai has performed what it describes as Asia’s first new-generation, bone-sparing hip procedure on two international patients, one aged 44 from Nebraska, USA, and another aged 58 from London, United Kingdom.
The procedure is designed to preserve a substantial portion of the patient’s healthy natural bone while providing a stable and functional reconstruction of the hip. Unlike conventional hip procedures that can involve extensive removal of bone, the bone-sparing approach seeks to retain more of the patient’s existing bone, potentially providing greater options for future hip interventions.
According to the hospital, the approach is also intended to enhance implant stability and support a return to highly functional, near-normal activity following surgery. The technique is considered more anatomical and aims to preserve the natural structure and function of the hip.
The procedures were carried out after detailed clinical assessments, comprehensive imaging, medical optimisation and surgical planning. Both patients have shown encouraging early functional recovery during the initial postoperative period.
Dr. Vijay C Bose, Joint Director and Senior Consultant, Orthopedics, who led the surgical team, said the procedure represents a change in the approach to hip replacement and reconstructive hip surgery.
“The goal is not simply to replace a painful joint, but to preserve as much of the patient’s own bone as possible while respecting the natural mechanics of the hip. It is based on a simple but important principle: whenever possible, surgery should preserve the patient’s bone and work with the body’s natural anatomy.”
He added that patient selection remains an important factor in determining the suitability of the procedure. Factors include age, bone quality, diagnosis, anatomy, activity requirements, overall medical condition and the surgeon’s assessment.

He said the treatment of patients from the USA and UK in Chennai also highlights the interest of international patients in specialised medical procedures in India.
