Wayanad Rises Again: Kerala’s Largest Rehabilitation Effort Underway

Kerala: Kerala’s largest rehabilitation effort has begun in Wayanad, marking a new chapter of hope and resilience for the region. The project, executed by the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS) Ltd., aims to restore the lives of families affected by the devastating July 30, 2024, landslides that claimed over 298 lives and displaced thousands.

The project spans 64 hectares in Kalpetta, offering beneficiaries seven cents of land and a 1,000-square-feet 2BHK home in a township with modern amenities. The township is designed as an eco-friendly, self-sustaining community, integrating housing, education, healthcare, and economic infrastructure to empower displaced families.

Key Features of the Township:

  • Housing: 1,000-square-feet 2BHK homes for beneficiaries
  • Healthcare: Fully equipped health center with laboratory, pharmacy, and examination rooms
  • Education: Modern Anganwadi with classrooms, play areas, and dining facilities
  • Economic Infrastructure: Public market with shops, stalls, and open marketplace
  • Community Center: Multi-purpose hall, library, sports club, playground, and open-air theater

The project is being undertaken on a not-for-profit basis, ensuring that every resource is dedicated to rebuilding lives and restoring hope for the affected families. The ULCCS Chairman, Rameshan Paleri, emphasized that the project goes beyond construction, aiming to rebuild lives and strengthen communities for the future.

The foundation stone for the project was laid by Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who highlighted the state’s resilience and unity in the face of adversity. The project has received financial support from the Karnataka government, the National Service Scheme, and DYFI, among others.
