We CAN Marks 25 Years of Autism Support Services in Chennai

Chennai: We CAN, an autism services organisation based in Chennai, has marked its 25th anniversary with a celebration attended by former BJP Tamil Nadu State President K. Annamalai as chief guest.

Founded in 2001 by Dr. Gita Sankaran, We CAN began providing structured and evidence-based support for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families at a time when such services were limited in Chennai.

The organisation currently provides diagnostic support, early intervention, parent counselling and training, individualised interventions, and life and independent-living skills programmes for young adults on the autism spectrum. Its services include approaches based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).

The anniversary event brought together children and young adults associated with the organisation, their families, staff and supporters. Annamalai interacted with the children and young adults and met their families and the We CAN team.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Gita Sankaran, Founder, We CAN, said the organisation’s focus remains on recognising individual potential and creating opportunities for learning, independence and participation in society.

The event also highlighted the role of families, professionals, caregivers and supporters in providing long-term support for individuals with autism and neurodiversity.

As it enters its 26th year, We CAN said it will continue its focus on family-centred and lifelong support services. The anniversary event was curated and executed by Atulya Weddings and Events.
