MGM Malar Enhances Neuro Care with Stroke Unit and Cutting-Edge Cath Lab

Chennai: In a significant step towards enhancing neurological care, MGM Malar Hospital has launched a Rapid Stroke Response Team dedicated to advanced stroke treatment and patient support. The initiative was announced ahead of World Stroke Day, observed on October 29, aligning with this year’s global theme — “Every Minute Counts.” The hospital also honoured several ‘stroke warriors’ who have successfully recovered and resumed healthy lives.

As part of the initiative, MGM Malar inaugurated a state-of-the-art Neuro-Cath Lab, equipped with advanced interventional angiography systems for precise diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment of brain and spine vascular conditions. The event featured expert talks by senior neurologists, who stressed the importance of early stroke recognition, rapid intervention, and preventive brain health awareness.

Prominent guests at the launch included Janakirman Vijayakumar Sembian, Director, Anabond Limited; veteran actor Senthil; Vinay, Deputy Commissioner of Customs, SEZ, Visakhapatnam; and Avudaiappan S, anchor at Zee Tamil.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Karthikeyan S, Senior Consultant, Interventional Neurology, MGM Malar, noted that stroke is the second leading cause of death and long-term disability globally. In Chennai alone, approximately 15,000 individuals are affected by stroke each year. He expressed concern over the rising incidence of stroke among younger adults, attributing it to sedentary lifestyles, unmanaged hypertension, and stress.

Dr. Karthikeyan emphasized the critical importance of the “golden hour” — the first hour after the onset of stroke symptoms — for effective treatment. “Every minute matters,” he said, underlining the need for rapid recognition of stroke signs and immediate access to a stroke-ready hospital.

Dr. Sai Prashanth PR, Consultant, Interventional Neurology, highlighted MGM Malar’s commitment to delivering comprehensive, patient-centered neurological care. He noted that recent advancements in diagnostic technology and specialized stroke care units have significantly improved survival and recovery rates. “Our expert neuro team handles complex brain and spine interventions with high success, supported by cutting-edge technology,” he said.

Dr. Aravinth Kumar A, Consultant, Neurosurgery and Endovascular Neurointerventions, stressed the importance of awareness and timely intervention in reducing the burden of stroke. He pointed to lifestyle-related factors such as diabetes, sedentary habits, and uncontrolled hypertension as key contributors to the growing incidence of stroke in India. He also emphasized the role of prevention through regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and early management of risk factors.

The newly inaugurated Cath Lab at MGM Healthcare – Malar features advanced imaging tools, real-time dose monitoring, and technologies that minimize radiation exposure. The system offers full-body coverage, seamless tableside control, and supports a wide range of complex cardiac and neurovascular procedures — delivering world-class care under one roof.
