MGM Healthcare Organises Cyclothon to Raise Awareness About Fatty Liver Disease
Chennai: MGM Healthcare organised a 2.5-km community cyclothon titled ‘Pedal for Liver’ in Chennai to raise awareness about fatty liver disease and promote healthier lifestyles. More than 150 cycling enthusiasts participated in the event, organised in association with Vada Chennai Cyclists.
The cyclothon was flagged off by V.K. Ramkumar, MLA of Anna Nagar, in the presence of Dr. Thiagarajan Srinivasan, Director of the Institute of Liver Diseases, Transplant and HPB Surgery at MGM Healthcare, along with hospital officials.
The initiative focused on Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), the medical term for fatty liver disease. The condition is associated with risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and physical inactivity. It can progress without noticeable symptoms and may lead to liver inflammation, fibrosis and advanced liver disease.
Dr. Thiagarajan Srinivasan highlighted the importance of early detection, clinical assessment and lifestyle changes. He said FibroScan, a non-invasive test, can assess liver stiffness and estimate liver fat levels. The need for testing, however, should be determined by a healthcare professional.
He also said an expert panel of 20 doctors had worked on standardising MASLD diagnosis, non-invasive testing and treatment approaches. A continuing medical education programme on MASLD was held on October 21, with more than 120 doctors participating.
As part of the cyclothon, registered participants were offered a 50% discount coupon for FibroScan at MGM Healthcare.
The initiative aimed to encourage regular physical activity and greater public awareness of liver health, early diagnosis and preventive care.
