MGM Healthcare Performs Rare Dual-Chamber Leadless Pacemaker Implantation in Chennai

Chennai: MGM Healthcare has successfully treated a 60-year-old patient suffering from a complex heart rhythm disorder with the implantation of a dual-chamber leadless (wireless) pacemaker — a cutting-edge procedure available at only a handful of centers in India.

The patient was admitted with a dangerously low heart rate of 44 beats per minute, which quickly deteriorated to 28 beats per minute due to a high-grade atrioventricular (AV) block. This rare electrical conduction disorder placed him at imminent risk of fainting, heart failure, or sudden cardiac arrest. After ruling out common causes such as medication effects, electrolyte imbalance, thyroid dysfunction, and coronary artery disease, doctors diagnosed him with second-degree AV block, Mobitz type II.

To stabilize the patient, a temporary pacemaker was first implanted. He then underwent an emergency AVEIR DR dual-chamber leadless pacemaker implantation — a next-generation, minimally invasive procedure that eliminates the need for surgical incisions, leads, or a device pocket. The procedure required advanced catheter navigation, precise device placement, and meticulous synchronization between the atrial and ventricular units.

The complex implantation was performed by a team of interventional cardiologists led by Dr. Babu Ezhumalai, Senior Consultant, Interventional Cardiology, Structural and Endovascular Interventions, MGM Healthcare.

Speaking about the breakthrough, Dr. Ezhumalai said:
“Unlike conventional pacemakers that require leads and a surgical pocket, the AVEIR DR eliminates these risks while preserving natural atrioventricular synchrony. It significantly reduces the chance of infection and represents a major advancement in managing complex cardiac rhythm disorders. To date, only a limited number of such implants have been performed nationwide.”

This successful outcome highlights MGM Healthcare’s commitment to adopting advanced technologies for safer, more effective cardiac care in India.
