Survey Reveals Low Awareness of Colorectal Cancer Symptoms in Chennai

Chennai: A nationwide Lifestyle & Digestive Health Awareness Survey has revealed significant gaps in awareness about colorectal cancer, with Chennai showing particularly concerning trends.

According to the survey, supported by Merck Specialities Pvt. Ltd., only 11.7% of respondents in Chennai recognise blood in stool as a warning sign of colorectal cancer. The findings were shared during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

The city-specific data also showed that 83.2% of respondents delay visiting a doctor when bowel habits change, while 57.1% reported experiencing irregular bowel movements. A majority—89.3%—rely on self-medication instead of seeking professional medical advice.

The nationwide survey covered over 10,000 respondents across 14 Indian cities and highlighted broader concerns, including high levels of self-medication, poor dietary habits, and low physical activity. More than 80% of respondents were unaware that blood in stool could indicate colorectal cancer.

Medical experts speaking at a press conference in Chennai stressed the importance of early detection and timely consultation. S. Subramanian noted that colorectal cancer often begins as polyps and is highly treatable when diagnosed early through screening methods such as colonoscopy.

Anita Ramesh highlighted that many individuals ignore early symptoms or rely on home remedies, delaying diagnosis. S. Rajasundaram added that low awareness of warning signs increases the risk of late detection.

S Viswanath emphasised that lifestyle factors such as unhealthy diets, lack of exercise, tobacco use, and obesity contribute significantly to rising colorectal cancer cases. He urged people to adopt healthier habits and undergo regular screening.

Experts underscored that improving awareness and encouraging early medical consultation are critical to reducing the disease burden and improving outcomes.
