MGM Healthcare Builds World’s Largest Intestinal Transplant Programme in 3 Years
Chennai: MGM Healthcare has developed what it says is the world’s largest intestinal rehabilitation and transplant programme within just three years, emerging as a global centre for complex abdominal organ care.
The hospital has performed over 40 intestinal transplants so far, including 21 in 2025 — the highest annual volume reported worldwide.
Led by Prof. Dr. Anil Vaidya, the programme delivers outcomes comparable to leading global centres, with 98% of patients successfully weaned off total parenteral nutrition (TPN), a long-term intravenous feeding method often linked to serious complications.
“This is not just a transplant programme, but a complete care ecosystem spanning surgery, rehabilitation, infection control, and long-term monitoring,” said Prof. Vaidya.
The initiative also marks a major advancement with the launch of India’s first Transplant Oncology programme, offering intestinal transplants as a potential treatment for select advanced cancers such as pseudomyxoma peritonei.
Key innovations include a home-based nutrition programme, near-zero infection protocols, and a nationwide critical care transport system that brings patients from across India to Chennai.
The development further strengthens Chennai’s position as a global hub for advanced medical care.
