MGM Healthcare performs LVAD implant in nearly 80-year-old patient
Chennai: MGM Healthcare has successfully implanted a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), a mechanical heart pump, in a nearly 80-year-old patient suffering from advanced heart failure, marking a first-of-its-kind procedure in India for a patient of this age group.
The retired Chennai resident had been experiencing severe breathlessness and repeated ICU admissions due to advanced left ventricular failure, a condition where the heart is unable to pump sufficient blood to the body. The patient also had complications including low blood pressure, kidney dysfunction, and lung congestion.
Considering the patient’s advanced age and fragile condition, doctors ruled out a heart transplant and opted for an LVAD implantation instead. The device supports the weakened left ventricle by assisting blood circulation.
The procedure was performed by a team led by Dr. K R Balakrishnan, Chairman – Cardiac Sciences, and Dr. Suresh Rao K G, Co-Director, Institute of Heart and Lung Transplant & Mechanical Circulatory Support at MGM Healthcare.
Following the surgery, the patient recovered in hospital for three weeks before discharge and is now reportedly leading an active and independent life.
Hospital officials said the procedure highlights advancements in cardiac care and the growing role of LVAD technology as a long-term treatment option for patients who may not be eligible for heart transplantation.
