Malaysia’s Joachim Chuah and Egypt’s Rouquaia Othman Win HCL-SRFI PSA Challenger Titles in Chennai
Chennai: The HCL-SRFI PSA Challenger Tournament concluded at the Indian Squash Academy in Chennai on Tuesday, with Joachim Chuah of Malaysia and Rouquaia Othman of Egypt emerging as the men’s and women’s champions, respectively.
The tournament, organised by HCL Group in partnership with the Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI), was held from July 11 to 15. It featured 48 squash players from 14 countries, including France, Malaysia, Egypt and India, competing in separate men’s and women’s PSA Challenger events for a total prize purse of USD 9,000.
Indian Players Reach Quarterfinals
Over five days, the tournament showcased international-level competition while providing Indian players with an opportunity to compete against experienced professionals on home courts and earn valuable PSA ranking points.
The event also highlighted India’s growing presence in international squash, with six Indian players progressing to the quarterfinal stage.
Men’s Final
In the men’s final, Joachim Chuah of Malaysia defeated Adham Roshdy of Egypt in a closely contested match.
The final score was:
11-6, 10-6, 19-21, 11-7, 11-8
to secure the championship title.
Women’s Final
In the women’s final, Rouquaia Othman of Egypt defeated Hwayeong Eum of Korea in straight games.
The final score was:
12-10, 11-7, 11-8
to claim the women’s title.
Prize Distribution
The winners were felicitated during the prize distribution ceremony by Allan Soyza, High Performance Coach, Squash Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), and Cyrus Poncha, Secretary General of the Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI).
Part of HCL Squash Tour
The Chennai tournament was part of the HCL Squash Tour, a multi-city PSA Challenger Tour certified by the Professional Squash Association (PSA).
According to the organisers, the tournament is intended to provide Indian players with greater exposure to international competition and strengthen the country’s squash ecosystem ahead of the sport’s debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
