Chennai Open WTA 250 Tennis Tournament Set for November 2–8

Chennai: The third edition of the Chennai Open International Women’s Tennis Championships, a WTA 250 tournament, will be held at the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Nungambakkam from November 2 to 8, with players from across the world competing for the title.

Indonesia’s Janice Tjen, ranked world No. 49, will be the top seed and return to Chennai to defend her title. The tournament, supported by the Government of Tamil Nadu, is among the highest-ranked international women’s tennis events held in India.

The player entry list features 28 countries, with 11 players ranked in the world’s top 100. The field includes Austria’s Lilli Tagger, ranked No. 61 and seeded second, and Thailand’s Lanlana Tararudee, ranked No. 63 and seeded third.

Other notable entrants include Hungary’s Panna Udvardy, Poland’s Magda Linette, runner-up in the 2022 edition, and Yulia Putintseva, a former world top-20 player and Asian Games bronze medallist in singles and doubles. Uzbekistan’s Polina Kudermetova, Chinese Taipei’s Joanna Garland, who reached the semifinals last year, and Serbia’s 19-year-old Teodora Kostovic are also on the entry list.

The tournament will offer total prize money of US$283,347. The singles champion will receive US$37,390 and 250 WTA ranking points, while the runner-up will earn US$22,125 and 163 points. The doubles champions will receive US$13,600.

The stadium, maintained by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), is being prepared for the event, with the court surface re-laid. Electronic line calling will be introduced on all three match courts, marking a first for a tennis tournament in India, according to the organisers.

Season tickets are priced at ₹7,500, ₹4,500 and ₹3,000. An early-bird offer is planned, with ticket sales dates to be announced.

Vijay Amritraj, president of the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA), heads the organising team. Sheetal Iyer will serve as tournament supervisor, becoming the first Indian woman to hold the position at a WTA 250 event in India, according to the organisers. Abhishek Mukherjee will be the referee, and Hiten Joshi the tournament director.
