MGM Healthcare Performs Groundbreaking Liver Transplant on 5-Month-Old Infant

Chennai: MGM Healthcare has successfully performed a reduced monosegmental living donor liver transplant on a 5-month-old infant suffering from Crigler-Najjar syndrome type 1, a rare genetic condition affecting liver function. The 10-hour surgery was performed on an 8 kg infant from Krishnagiri, and the patient recovered well, being discharged in 14 days.

A Rare Condition Requiring a Complex Surgery

Crigler-Najjar syndrome affects one in a million newborns, where the liver is unable to break down bilirubin, leading to a high risk of permanent neurological damage, liver cirrhosis, and liver failure. The only definitive solution is a liver transplant. Dr. Thiagarajan Srinivasan, Senior Consultant & Director, Institute of Liver Diseases, Transplant & HPB Surgery, led the surgery, which involved reducing the infant mother’s liver size to ensure a perfect fit for the small body.

A Team Effort

The surgery was a team effort, with Dr. Srikanth Thummala and Dr. L. Soundara Rajan, consultants, and Dr. Dinesh Babu and Dr. Nivash Chandrasekaran handling anesthesia and intensive care. Dr. Srinivasan highlighted the complexity of the surgery, stating, “To carry out a living-donor liver transplant in an infant who could receive only 150-180g of liver posed a big challenge.” The success of the surgery is attributed to the skill and commitment of the medical team and the generosity of the donor.

A Commitment to Quality Care

This landmark achievement at MGM Healthcare highlights the hospital’s commitment to providing high-quality medical care. Dr. Srinivasan and his team’s expertise in difficult surgeries and transplants will continue to make a remarkable impact on the lives of patients and their families.
