Chennai Woman Survives Simultaneous Stroke and Heart Attack After Rare Triple Procedure at MGM Healthcare Malar

A 68-year-old woman in Chennai was successfully treated after suffering a stroke and heart attack at the same time. Doctors performed three minimally invasive procedures in a single sitting, enabling her discharge within four days.

Chennai: Doctors at MGM Healthcare Malar Hospital in Adyar successfully treated a 68-year-old woman who suffered the rare and life-threatening combination of an acute stroke and a heart attack simultaneously.

The patient, who had a history of hypertension and diabetes, was diagnosed with critical blockages affecting both the brain and the heart. Medical examinations revealed severe narrowing in an intracranial artery within the middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory and in the carotid artery, leading to a stroke. She was also found to have significant coronary artery disease that restricted blood flow to the heart.

A multidisciplinary team of specialists carried out a series of minimally invasive procedures in a single sitting. Doctors first performed intracranial stenting to restore blood flow in the affected brain artery, followed by carotid angioplasty to address the blockage in the neck. Coronary angioplasty was then performed to improve blood flow to the heart.

All three procedures were completed under local anaesthesia using minimally invasive techniques, without the need for major surgery. The patient recovered quickly and was discharged from the hospital within four days.

The medical team was led by Dr. Karthikeyan, Senior Consultant and Interventional Neurologist, and Dr. Manohar, Senior Consultant and Interventional Cardiologist.

According to Dr. Karthikeyan, the case was particularly challenging because both the brain and heart were affected by critical blockages at the same time. He noted that intracranial stenting is a highly specialised neurointerventional procedure available only at a limited number of centres, as it involves navigating delicate blood vessels deep within the brain. The treatment was performed through a minimally invasive pinhole approach and combined with coronary angioplasty during the same procedure session.

Hospital officials said the case highlights the importance of rapid diagnosis, multidisciplinary coordination, and timely intervention in managing complex medical emergencies involving multiple organ systems.

MGM Healthcare Malar Hospital’s stroke unit provides round-the-clock care through a team of interventional neurologists, neurosurgeons, anaesthetists, stroke specialists, physiotherapists, and critical care experts, supporting patients requiring emergency neurovascular treatment.
