Growing Popularity of Himalayan Rock Salt Highlights Need for Adequate Iodine Intake
Chennai: The increasing use of Himalayan rock salt in Indian households reflects a growing consumer preference for products perceived as natural and traditional. At the same time, health experts continue to emphasise the importance of maintaining adequate iodine intake, a key factor in preventing iodine deficiency disorders.
Himalayan rock salt is known for its pink colour and naturally occurring trace minerals, including calcium, potassium and magnesium. Sourced from ancient rock deposits, it has gained popularity among consumers seeking alternatives to regular table salt.
Despite this trend, iodine intake remains a public health concern in India. According to the Salt Commissioner of India, more than 200 million people in the country may still be at risk of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDDs), while over 70 million people could be affected by goitre and related health conditions.
To address iodine deficiency, India introduced the Universal Salt Iodization (USI) programme under the National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Programme (NIDDCP). The initiative has significantly improved access to iodized salt across the country, although national data indicates that variations in iodine adequacy and public awareness continue to exist.
In this context, manufacturers have introduced iodized rock salt products that combine the characteristics of Himalayan rock salt with added iodine for everyday use.
One such product is Tata Salt Himalayan Rock Salt, which is marketed as an iodized rock salt intended for regular cooking. According to the company, the product retains the natural characteristics of Himalayan rock salt, including its trace minerals and distinctive taste, while contributing to dietary iodine intake.
The growing preference for alternative salts has renewed discussions around balancing consumer choices with nutritional requirements, particularly ensuring adequate iodine consumption as part of a healthy diet.
