Saveetha Hospital Chennai Performs Two Successful Deceased Donor Liver Transplants

Chennai: Saveetha Hospital has successfully carried out two Deceased Donor Liver Transplantations (DDLTs) for patients suffering from end-stage liver disease.

The recipients were Amit Saha, a 37-year-old resident of Kolkata, and Viswabarathi, a 67-year-old resident of Chennai. Both patients had decompensated chronic liver disease with portal hypertension, and liver transplantation had been identified as the definitive treatment.

The transplant procedures were performed by Dr. J. Nirmal and the liver transplant team from the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplant at Saveetha Hospital. Each surgery lasted approximately 10 hours and was successfully completed on May 24, 2026, and June 4, 2026, respectively.

According to the hospital, the donor organs were received from two individuals who were declared brain dead after sustaining traumatic brain injuries in separate road traffic accidents. The organs were donated with the consent of their families.

The hospital stated that both patients had an uneventful postoperative recovery with satisfactory graft function under the care of a multidisciplinary transplant team. The patients continue to show steady clinical improvement.

Dr. N. M. Veeraiyan, Chancellor of Saveetha Hospital, acknowledged the donor families for consenting to organ donation and thanked the healthcare professionals involved in the transplant procedures.

The announcement was made in the presence of Dr. J. Kumutha, Dean; Dr. S. Ponnambala Namasivayam, Medical Superintendent, Saveetha Hospital; Dr. Ashwani Kumar, Vice Chancellor; and Dr. Sheeja S. Varghese, Registrar of SIMATS.
