Tamil Language Meets Global Science at AM Jain College Conference

Chennai: Agurchand Manmull Jain College, in collaboration with the Tamil Development Board, University of Madras, and Sandhya Publications, hosted a two-day international conference titled “Multidisciplinary Tamil Education and Scientific Development” on October 24–25, 2025. The event aimed to promote the integration of Tamil language into advanced fields such as science, technology, and Artificial Intelligence, showcasing how scholars across disciplines are enriching Tamil education through innovative approaches.

The conference brought together over 25 eminent Tamil scholars from around the world, highlighting how multidisciplinary expertise is being applied to Tamil studies. The initiative seeks to lay a strong foundation for the future growth of Tamil language and its relevance in modern academic and technological contexts.

The inaugural session featured distinguished guests including lyricists Vairamuthu; M. Rajendran, Former Vice-Chancellor of Thanjavur Tamil University; Murugesu Dayanithi, Director and Head of the Department of Tamil Language, National Institute of Education, Sri Lanka; Sandhya Natarajan, Proprietor of Sandhya Publications; Udan Kumar Chordia, Secretary; Hemant P. Chordia, Associate Secretary; M. M. Ramya, Dean; R. Surekha, Deputy Dean; and N. Venkataramanan, Director of AM Jain College.

Speaking at the event, Udan Kumar Chordia emphasized the importance of integrating multidisciplinary perspectives into Tamil education. “We must recognise that the world’s leading nations have achieved distinction through the intellectual strength of their mother tongue. There is a clear need for multidisciplinary Tamil knowledge to flourish in Tamil Nadu. Our Department of Tamil not only teaches traditional subjects such as grammar and Sangam literature but also offers modern Tamil literary education. This conference will serve as a bridge between tradition and modernity,” he said.

The Valedictory Session is set to feature Kovi. Chelian, Minister for Higher Education, Government of Tamil Nadu, as the Chief Guest. Other speakers include R. Kurinji Venthan, Head of the Department of Foreign Tamil Studies and Dean, School of Developing Tamil, Tamil University, Thanjavur; S. Thirunavukkarasu, Principal, Sri Sivagnana Balaya Swamigal Tamil Arts and Science College, Mayilam; Ilakkuvan Sokkalingam, Professor and Trainer, New Zealand; P. Thamaraikannan, Principal, M.G.R. Government Women’s College, Villupuram; Chandrika Subramanian, Founder of the Australia Tamil Development Forum (joining online); and P. Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Tamil, Central University of Tamil Nadu, Thiruvarur.

The conference reaffirmed AM Jain College’s commitment to advancing Tamil research and education through global collaboration and interdisciplinary innovation.
