Kauvery Hospital Organises Night Walk to Raise Lupus Awareness in Chennai

Chennai: Kauvery Hospital, Alwarpet, organised a Night Walk for Lupus Awareness at Elliot’s Beach Road, Besant Nagar, on Saturday, bringing together lupus patients, caregivers, doctors, healthcare professionals and members of the public to promote awareness about the autoimmune disease.

The awareness walk was conducted by the hospital’s Department of Rheumatology to educate people about lupus, a chronic autoimmune condition that can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, blood cells and brain. Medical experts highlighted the importance of early diagnosis, timely treatment and regular follow-up care in managing the disease effectively.

The event was held during the evening hours, from 7 pm to 8 pm, considering that many lupus patients are sensitive to sunlight and ultraviolet exposure, which can worsen symptoms.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sham S, Senior Consultant Rheumatology, Kauvery Hospital Alwarpet, said awareness programmes help people recognise symptoms early and seek appropriate medical attention. He noted that the second edition of the Lupus Walkathon witnessed increased participation compared to the previous year.

The hospital’s rheumatology department provides treatment for various autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, vasculitis and spondyloarthritis. According to doctors, lupus can sometimes affect vital organs and may require specialised treatment and critical care support.

Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Co-founder and Executive Director, Kauvery Group of Hospitals, said the walkathon aimed to create greater public awareness about lupus and ensure that patients receive the support and care they need throughout their treatment journey.

The event concluded with active participation from the public, reinforcing the importance of awareness, early diagnosis and compassionate care for people living with lupus.
