Tamil Nadu Records First Release of Captive-Bred Banded Bamboo Sharks into the Sea
Chennai: In a first for India, VGP Marine Kingdom has released captive-bred Banded Bamboo Sharks into the sea, marking a significant development in marine conservation and sustainable aquaculture efforts in the country.
The release took place in the presence of Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister A. Srinath, along with marine biologists, conservation experts, government officials, students, members of the media and other guests.
According to VGP Marine Kingdom, the sharks released were born and raised entirely under the care of its marine life specialists. The institution stated that the successful breeding and release programme highlights the potential of scientific aquarium management and conservation-focused breeding initiatives in supporting marine biodiversity.
Earlier this year, VGP Marine Kingdom had announced the successful captive breeding of Banded Bamboo Sharks. The release of the sharks into the sea marks the next stage of the programme and contributes to ongoing efforts aimed at marine species conservation.
Speaking at the event, Fisheries Minister A. Srinath emphasised the importance of increasing awareness about marine conservation, particularly among younger generations. He noted that conservation initiatives supported by scientific research and public participation are important for protecting marine ecosystems and preserving India’s marine heritage.
VGP Group Chairman VG Santhosam said the initiative reflects the organisation’s commitment towards conservation and public awareness. He also expressed appreciation for the efforts of the team involved in the project.
VGP Marine Kingdom Managing Director VGP Ravidas said the release represents an important milestone for marine conservation efforts and demonstrates the role that scientific research and responsible management practices can play in biodiversity protection.
Director VGPR Premdas said the project was envisioned as part of broader efforts to promote marine education, conservation and scientific learning. He expressed hope that the initiative would encourage greater collaboration among conservationists, researchers, institutions and the public.
The Banded Bamboo Shark is a bottom-dwelling species recognised for the distinctive striped pattern seen during its juvenile stage. Marine experts note that the species plays a role in maintaining ecological balance within marine habitats.
Conservation programmes involving captive breeding and release can contribute to scientific understanding of marine species while supporting biodiversity conservation goals.
VGP Marine Kingdom has undertaken several initiatives related to marine education, species conservation and public awareness. The facility was established with a focus on conservation, education and scientific engagement with marine life, in addition to providing visitor experiences.
The event concluded with participants highlighting the need for continued efforts to protect marine ecosystems and promote sustainable practices for the future of ocean life.
