Amazon Invests US$1.2 Million to Preserve Mumbai’s Flamingo Habitat

Mumbai: Amazon has announced a US$1.2 million investment to restore the mangrove forests and mudflats that are crucial for Mumbai’s iconic flamingo population. The initiative, funded through Amazon’s $100 million Right Now Climate Fund, aims to promote climate resilience, biodiversity, and nature conservation.

In partnership with Hasten Regeneration, a social enterprise, the project will:

  • Clean up plastic waste along the Thane Creek in Mumbai
  • Plant mangroves in Gujarat
  • Install a trash boom to block plastic waste from entering the Mumbai basin
  • Remove at least 150 tons of plastic waste
  • Replant flamingo feeding grounds

The project will also generate employment opportunities for local communities, particularly women-led planting companies.

Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Operations, Amazon India, stated, “The preservation of Mumbai’s flamingo habitat is crucial for biodiversity and communities. We aim to safeguard this habitat for future generations.”

Sheeba Sen, co-founder of Hasten Regeneration’s India branch, added, “This collaborative effort will clean up the polluted Thane Creek, create a positive social impact, and employ women to replant mangroves.”

The initiative aligns with the Indian government’s Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Incomes.
